Beginning Tapestry Intensive

Everything you need to know to get started with tapestry weaving. Besides the actual tapestry techniques, and advice on designing, you’ll learn about looms, yarns, helpful books and other resources.

No previous weaving experience is necessary.

Class size limited to 6.

Saturday, January 28 and Saturday, February 11, 2012

10 AM – 3PM (with 30 minute lunch break)

Classes will be held in East Greenwich, RI.

$175, plus $25 loom deposit. I have nice frame looms, or if you have a portable loom you’d prefer to use, let me know. All materials are included.

Small Works at Emporium Gallery

Tapestry on the Vineyard

The American Tapestry Biennial 8 has been at the American Textile History Museum now since late January. The last day to see it is May 1.

Micala Sidore will present a lecture “Bodies of Work,” at 2 PM, so you have an extra incentive to visit that day.

Janet Austin demonstrates the techniques used to create this venerable art form. Enjoy an opportunity to talk with the artist/weaver and see how tapestry weaving is done. See how various techniques are used and try weaving on a tapestry yourself!

March 13 Susan Martin Maffei Under the Influence; or Is It Just Inspiration? 2 PM

Susan Martin Maffei explores the effect of textile history, both of the past and personal, on the creative process and growth of her own work in tapestry. Her path, including an overseas internship, commercial studio work, and gallery conservation of antique textiles, provides insights into the development of the artist/ weaver of the 21st century

April 10 Anne Jackson Anne Jackson: Knotted Tapestries 2 PM

Anne Jackson makes vibrant, complex tapestries exploring contemporary ideas, often in a historical context. Focusing on her current project, 'The Witchcraft Series', her illustrated talk will cover the development of her work and take a wry look at the place of textiles in the art world.

May 1 Micala Sidore Bodies of Work 2 PM

Focusing on the human form in tapestry, Micala Sidore examines the history of tapestry weaving from an Andean culture in 500 BCE to the present. For both newcomers to tapestry and those in-the-know, she suggests an approach to viewing tapestries, understanding what makes them successful, and appreciating the weaver’s work.

American Tapestry Biennial 8

is coming to the American Textile History Museum, in Lowell, MA.

TWiNE members Janet Austin, Julia Mitchell, Eve Pearce, and Suzanne Pretty are among the 54 artists included in this international juried exhibit. Suzanne Pretty won first prize. Although this exhibit comes around every 2 years, it has not traveled to New England since 2004, so don't miss it!

There will be lectures and a tapestry demonstration during the exhibit, which will be up from January 22 - May 1, 2011. Stay tuned for details.

This week-long intensive will give students the opportunity to fully explore their weaving potential, while working on the Art Center's wonderful Mirrix tapestry looms. Students will learn and begin to refine tapestry techniques, while creating pieces that reference their own 'inner landscapes!'

What is TWiNE?

TWiNE is Tapestry Weavers in New England, a group of tapestry weavers who meet 3 times a year in various locations around New England.

You don't have to live in New England to join us.

We organize workshops, retreats and exhibits.

Most recently: TWiNE 2008: A Contemporary Look at Tapestry, September 2008 at the Rivertree Center for the Arts in Kennebunk, ME.

This blog is a work in progress, but soon it will include photos of tapestries, links to TWiNE members' websites and blogs, lists of useful stuff like teachers and materials, announcements of exhibits and whatever else we get around to posting here.
